Verse meaning
This is the verse translation, not a definition of the individual word.
[Fasting is for] a specific number of days; but if anyone of you is ill or on a journey, he should make up for those days. As for those who can only fast with hardship, compensation can be made by feeding a needy person [for each day]. But if anyone volunteers to give more, it is better for him. Yet fasting is better for you, if only you knew[1].

[1] Initially, those able to fast were given the choice between fasting and feeding a needy person for each day; this option was abrogated by the next verse 185 [Al-Bukhārī: 4507]. Ibn ‘Abbās (رضي الله عنهما), however, held that the ruling was not abrogated and applies to those who can fast only with great hardship, such as the very old person. [Al-Bukhārī: 4505]
